BAC March 2006 News & Digest

Hello BICYCLE ACCESS COUNCIL members.

It's a beautiful day in Pennsylvania!

THE SHOW MUST GO ON...

The Bike Show, that is, March 11 and 12 in Carlisle, PA. This is a first in Pennsylvania with dealers, vendors, exhibits and demonstrations planned. A similar event will be held the following weekend in Edison, NJ, which is the second year for The Bike Show host. There is a fee to attend.

The Bicycle Access Council will be there. Plan to stop by and check it out. See www.bikeshowexpo.com for more info and directions.

THE 2006 PENNSYLVANIA BIKE CLUB CONFERENCE...

Is scheduled for Saturday, April 1, in York, PA. No fooling! Clubs are invited to attend this meeting to learn about club dynamics and share their experiences with other Pennsylvania bicycle clubs. The conference is meant to showcase Best Practices. This is an opportunity for new club officers to gain confidence and insight about their duties and for established clubs to show leadership from experience.

John Allen, the author of "Street Smarts" has accepted an invitation to attend this year's conference. "Street Smarts" is the main text of the Pennsylvania Bicycle Driver's Manual published by PennDOT.

John is also a Director for the League of American Bicyclists.

This will be the fourth annual Pennsylvania Bike Club Conference hosted by BAC. Detailed information was mailed and e-mailed to bike clubs in January. Ask if your club has received this information and will be attending.

TUNNEL VISION FUNDRAISING...

Is what our trail friends have for the opening of the Big Savage Tunnel this Spring near Somerset, PA. A current auction on eBay will allow the bid winner and eleven friends the privilege of being the first to ride through the tunnel. The Big Savage Tunnel is part of the Great Allegheny Passage, a trail connection between Pittsburgh and Washington DC. The tunnel is sealed over the winter to prevent damage from the winter freeze/thaw conditions. Proceeds for the winning bid go to the Somerset County Rail Trail Association for future trail maintenance.
